If you are married to a US citizen, you are eligible for a Green Card. However, in case the marriage took place abroad, you have to wait for sometime before you can actually get the Green Card. In that case, you have to file a petition to the US Consulate. The problem is that the whole process takes some time (about six months) and many couples hate the idea of staying away from each other for such a long time.
